We Love Sounds

23/07/2008

The Entertainment Quarter was once again tranformed into a musical wonderland as the We Love Sounds crew put on this years edition of one of the biggest Sydney festivals.  The line-up included the likes of Cassius, Mixmaster Mike, Bonde De Role, !!!, Stephan Bodzin, Ellen Allien, Dubfire, Mr. Oizo, and many many more.  I had seen a few of these acts at the Warehouse festival in Canberra the weekend before (as you know) so the presure was off and I got to enjoy myself a little bit in between snapping.  Stephan Bodzin rocked it once again, both Bonde De Role and !!! put on great shows, and I ♥ Ellen Allien.

On a side note: The We Love Sounds week was the 1 year celebration of me running around with a camera at clubs and gigs, so 'hip hip hurray' for me!

Kate Miller-Heidke

18/06/2008

Kate Miller-Heidke was touring the country earlier this year to promote her new album 'Little Eve'. After failing to make it to one of her shows over the last few months, I finally did make it to her gig at The Annandale a few weeks ago where she was supported by Ashleigh Mannix and Ray Mann Three.

I have been to a fair few gigs so far this year, and I must say Kate's was one of the stand-outs.  Her music is absolutely stunning, her voice is amazing, and her slightly-cheeky on-stage appearance is a joy to watch.  I believe her tour has ended by now, but I highly recommended you get yourself a ticket the next time she's flying through the country.

Warehouse Winter Music Festival

03/06/2008

Friction and Lexington Music put on a little party called the Warehouse Winter Music Festival at the AIS Arena in Canberra on the weekend. They were kind enough to give me a media pass so I travelled down for the weekend to join the party, and what a party it was!  Unfortunately superstars Cassius missed their plane and were unable to attend, but the likes of Mixmaster Mike (Beastie Boys), Bonde De Role, Utah Saints, Hybrid, STA, and many more put on such a good day and night that Cassius' absence was soon forgotten.

Below are some of my fav photos of the day, but all you Canberra punters can find the rest of the photos on Hobogestapo.  Remember the name btw, as I expect to be back for ForeShore.  See you all then!

Sparkadia

08/05/2008

Sparkadia are back touring the country and as such they put on two shows at the Hopetoun Hotel in Surry Hills.  After hearing some good words about the boys I went and checked out their Wednesday night gig.  Cuthbert & The Night Walkers and Philadelphia Grand Jury were supporting for the night.  You can find more snaps on FasterLouder if you're interested...

DJ Shadow

08/05/2008

Around 7pm I got a last minute offer to go see DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist at the Big Top.  Things kicked off around 8:30pm from memory but somehow we didn't make it there till about 10:20pm giving us just enough time to booze up before Shadow came on.

The event itself was very different from what I expected.  To no surprise the Big Top was packed out, but the music was a lot more varied and mellow than anticipated.  I was expecting a big club-type party and instead it was very much a band-like performance.  Seeing the boys in action, live, doing whatever crazy mixing scratching stuff they do was great.  And even though I was all the way at the back, I managed to appreciate it all thanks to the massive amount of cameras (incl. a small one attached to Shadow's arm) being fed live onto massive video screens.  No cool DJ Shadow photos, sorry, but here are some random friend snaps.

Together with some friends I tried to catch the last train back to the city... we missed it by just 2 seconds. We decided to take the train to North Sydney to cab it to the city from there, thus avoiding the massive amounts of punters trying to get cabs at Milsons Point.  Unfortunatelly this didn't work out too well as the train due in approximately 0 minutes and the one due 2 minutes later never showed up.  As such we ultimately walked it to North Sydney, cabbed it back to the city, stopped at Maccas, and then rushed to Chinese Laundry to get the weekly club shots in... Ibiza boys Filthy Gorgeous were visiting for the night and put on a fab set.  Unfortunatelly I didn't get there till 2am and had to shoot for a while so I didn't get to hang out and enjoy much of it :(
